Brookhaven is one of Buckhead’s many neighborhoods, arguably one of Atlanta’s most famous, but Brookhaven located in the northeast part of Buckhead, itself includes a number of smaller neighborhoods, including Historic Brookhaven and several others.

Historic Brookhaven listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1985 has a history that dates back to 1910, when a group of investors developed the area after an initial purchase of land, approximately 11 miles north of Atlanta, that would become Georgia’s oldest planned golf course and country club residential community. In 1986, the National Park Service deemed it the Brookhaven Historic District.

Historic Brookhaven is the historic residential neighborhood from which the area derives its name, consists of three separately platted subdivisions with similar street patterns, houses and landscape features that merged together to create one homogeneous residential neighborhood in northeast Atlanta. Prominent Atlantans had been building summer cottages on the land from the early 1900’s.

Originally called Brookhaven Estates, which included the country club property, was the first subdivision to be platted in 1910. Country Club Estates was laid out in 1929 and the Carleton Operating Company land was platted in 1936. The vast majority of these latter areas were built between the Great Depression and 1942.

The neighborhood, just east of Buckhead, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. The neighborhood boundaries are well defined, and it stretches from Peachtree Dunwoody Road on the west, Windsor Parkway to the north, Mabry Drive to the east, and Peachtree Road to the south. A majority of the neighborhood lies within the extreme northeastern tip of the city of Atlanta. Straddling both Fulton and DeKalb counties with 46 streets, the neighborhood boasts 900 homes, which include some original structures designed by well known Atlanta architects.

Houses include one and two-story buildings finished in wood, brick, stucco, and stone. Most of the houses are designed in Colonial or Georgian Revival styles. They typically have three or five bays, gable hipped roofs, weatherboard or brick exteriors, and front entrances highlighted by a frontispiece doorway, a small portico, or a doorway trimmed with sidelights or over lights. Each lot is richly landscaped with pines and other shade trees, shrubs, ground covers and grass lawns.

The historic golf course features a lake, wooded areas, and the Capital City Clubhouse. The clubhouse was originally built for the Brookhaven Country Club but was leased by the Capital City Club in 1911 since most of its members lived in the neighborhood. They completed the purchase in 1915, and expanded the original 9 hole golf course to 18 holes. The houses in the district reflect a continuous and consistent development from 1910 to 1941, by which time a majority of the housing in Brookhaven was completed.

Brookhaven homes for sale, surrounding the Capital City Club range in price from $800,000 to $4,000,000, many designed by a number of well-known Atlanta architects of the pre-war period. Brookhaven Condos for sale range in price from $100,000 to over $1 Million. The wealth of Brookhaven has increased in recent decades, and with a median household income of $236,393, Brookhaven has become one of metropolitan Atlanta's most affluent communities.
